Several ancestry.com trees list him as the son of Lewis Hicks Sr and Elizabeth Smith who married in Stokes County, NC on 23 Dec 1827 and the original person listing this memorial stated Lewis was the son of Lewis Sr. and Elizabeth Smith - [Note: It appears he was born prior to this marriage date. In addition, research uncovered the 1859 estate documents for Lewis Hicks b. 1803 that list his wife as Elizabeth. Lewis Jr. is NOT mentioned in the documents as an heir. Research is on-going.]

Husband of Martha Elizabeth Hicks - married "at the dwelling house of Landon H. Southern on 7 Dec 1851". - John H. Glidewell was the bondsman.
